About Medical Laboratory Department
The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is one of the health-science departments of Kurdistan
Technical Institute (KTI), established in 2018 under the scientific standards and licensing authority of the Ministry
of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Since its foundation, the department
has invested in the three conditions it considers essential to credible technical education in laboratory science: a
safe and properly equipped teaching laboratory, a curriculum benchmarked against international practice in
medical laboratory science, and a qualified teaching staff. The department maintains its own diagnostic teaching
laboratories on the KTI main campus at Sulaimani Heights, and its students routinely deliver supervised
community testing activities as part of their training.
The program leads to the Advanced Technical Diploma of Medical Laboratory Technology. It is a full-time,
conventional, self-governing program of two years' minimum duration, organized as four semesters of sixteen
weeks and totaling 120 ECTS. It is designed for students entering directly from high-school education who intend
to work at the bench. The graduate is a medical laboratory technician: a practitioner who collects and receives
specimens, performs the routine analytical repertoire of a diagnostic laboratory across hematology, clinical
chemistry, microbiology, serology, parasitology, histotechnology and molecular diagnostics, applies quality
control to decide whether a result may be released, reports accurately, and recognizes the point at which a test
lies beyond the diploma's scope and must be referred.
